In choosing our topic, we wanted to do something involving the Cold War. The Cold War was such an interesting time for the United States. It was a conflict between the Soviets and the United States, but also communism versus democracy. The time period was very unique, as the United States and the Soviets were the only two world superpowers and countries well off after WWII in Europe. It was also when the United States broke out of isolationism, and gained their reputation that they have in today’s times as “global policemen” Originally, my partner and I decided to do our project on the Korean War, but while conducting research we came across the Truman Doctrine. This speech intrigued me, as it was a very critical speech in the war. Every word was written with meaning and portrayed the viewpoint of the United States. Truman was put in a difficult position while writing this, because he did not want to come across as too “anti-communism” but he needed to make sure that his message came across with out looking weak or vulnerable. The Truman Doctrine was the first step that the US took in the war on communism.
While conducting our research, we started with the textbook because it gave general background information that was easy to understand. Then we used databases because they had a large arrangement of article selections, all with different opinions. We also used several websites, where we came across two primary sources. One came from The Harry S Truman Library website, which provided helpful information regarding Truman, the Truman doctrine, and his thought process behind the speech. We tried to organize our notes with topic sentences in efforts to narrow down our research into only taking notes on relevant information, because in the past we have struggled with including useless facts. The topic sentences also made our research organized, and now when we transferred our research into a project we knew where to find the specific information we were looking for.
In selecting our project, we wanted to do something creative, but a project that would still portray the information in a logical and effective way. We feared that with a tri-fold exhibit we would have difficulties portraying the information in a logical, sequential manner. With a website, we can have different links and tabs for each topic, making the project cohesive. We can also include pictures to have visual aids to enhance our project. A website is also more technological than a tri fold, so it will be more appealing to our classmates and the judges. A website is also hands on, making the presentation interactive and engaging. Neither my partner nor I has ever made a website for a school project, so it would be a unique and interesting experience for the both of us.
